For this year’s Coastside Showcase of Artists with Asian Heritage exhibition, I am excited to invite exceptional artists to delve deep into the concept of refuge—both within themselves and within their communities—during these turbulent times. I encouraged them to expand our understanding of “Refuge” as transformative spaces of healing and protection. These sanctuaries can be both tangible locations and imaginative realms that resonate with personal significance.

Artists are urged to reflect on the rich journeys of their own lives as well as those of their ancestors: consider where they have come from, where they currently stand, and what future opportunities lie ahead as we collectively seek to be recognized, heard, and valued.

Asian Americans have extended their support to countless communities grappling with diaspora. In the face of forced displacement and assimilation, what often disappears is culture, language, and community. How can we redefine Refuge to embody a universal essence of safety and belonging?
